Barbie: The Pearl Princess Movie

Rating: NR (very clean Barbie movie!)
Run Time: 74 minutes

Lumina and Delphin
Summary(amazon.com):
Barbie stars as Lumina, a mermaid who dreams of being a princess. As long as she can remember, she’s had a magical power that makes pearls dance and glow! Lumina, and her best friend Kuda, a pink seahorse, embark on an adventure to a majestic mer-kingdom. There, she uses her powers to help her friends prepare for the Royal Ball. Lumina then discovers that her magical pearls are the key to unlocking her true destiny and ultimately saving the kingdom.

My Review:
I was so excited when this movie came out, especially since it's been a while since Mattel came out with another mermaid Barbie movie. As soon as this movie began to play, I was in complete awe... the colors, the artwork... it felt like I was underwater! They even got the sounds of being underwater perfectly! I loved this new character Lumina. She is very innocent and beautiful, and it is clear she will do anything to help the ones she loves. Her new seahorse friend, Kuda, is also pretty funny! I also loved the mermaid city. It reminded me of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, but full of breathtaking mermaids! I also thought the hair salon was pretty cute, and I loved seeing the mermaids get dolled up for the big party at the end.

Lumina and her parents
The main concept, or lesson that really stood out to me was people will stop at nothing for power and wealth, and it is up to people like Lumina, people with good intentions and love, to stop them. I also loved the music, which will be featured on this blog soon! The only two things that annoyed me about this movie was (yes, I know it's a Barbie movie) everything, was pink, not just pink, but hot pink! It started to give me a headache after a while; pink tail, pink castle, pink coral, pink Kuda!
Also, I didn't find much of a personality in Lumina compared to other Barbie characters, such as Merliah from Barbie In A Mermaid Tale. It seems all she cares about is being a princess and going to balls, which gave her a bit of an air headed personality. I really did enjoy this movie, and it was very well made! I give this movie (****) 4 stars.

Barbie In A Mermaid Tale 2

Barbie In A Mermaid Tale 2Rating: NR ( Dont worry, G rated! It's Barbie guys.)
Run Time: 1 hour and 14 minutes

Summary(amazon.com):
Surf's up for Barbie as she returns as Merliah, the surfing champ who's also a mermaid princess, in this new sea-quel where she learns anything is possible when you stay true to yourself!

My Review:

I loved the first "Barbie In A Mermaid Tale" and when I found out there was a second movie, I was so excited! This sea-quel proves to be just as good as the first movie. You know how some sequels are horrible? That was not the case with this sea gem! Merliah proves once again that she can accept herself and be completely awesome in both the human and mer-world. She is a very modern, cool and radical chick, and she is also defiant and has an edge to her that other barbie characters just don't possess. She really represents a teenager who goes through a coming-of-age process, and Kylie does as well. She also proves that you can be confident, strong, but not arrogant like her surf-enemy, Kylie. The music is also very fresh and modern with a Malibu/ Caribbean feel. This is my new favorite:
Do The Mermaid!
I find that kids can also relate to her, since she had once been separated from her kingdom, and was adopted by another family member, and ever since she became a mermaid, she has learned to build a relationship with her mother. I think my absolute favorite part of this movie was that they showed mermaids from all over the world, and the dolls are SO cool! Check em out guys! I want to collect all of them!

Most of all, I love the lesson this movie tells; there is a limit to how far you need to prove yourself, especially if it involves interfering in other people's personal lives, which is a lesson both Merliah and Kylie learn. Watch out though! Eris comes back with a vengeance and her little angelfish! I have absolutely fallen in love with the "Barbie In A Mermaid Tale" series, and I definitely want my mer-readers to go check them out!
I give this movie (*****) 5 Stars!

Barbie In A Mermaid Tale Movie

Rating: NR ( It is perfectly fine for children, of course!)
Run Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Summary(amazon.com):
Barbie stars as Merliah, a surfer who learns a shocking secret: she's a mermaid! She and her dolphin friend set out for an undersea adventure to rescue her mother, the queen of Oceana.

My Review:
When I first picked up this movie from the library, I was a bit skeptical that it was going to be too juvenile. However, as soon as the first few minutes of the movie started, I became hooked! What I loved overall about the movie is that it had a similar vibe to the movie "Aquamarine" (see the review here!) as well as the book series "Tempest" by Tracy Deebs and "The Mermaids Mirror" by L.K. Madigan (see the review here). The movie had a fun Malibu/ Summer time feeling! When Merliah enters the underwater kingdom of Oceana, I thought it was fun that the creators of the movie made Bloomingtales and Seaphora, which are popular make up and clothing stores. I also loved the animation, which was bright, vibrant and colorful! I would have to say, two things that I didnt enjoy about the movie was that the storyline began a little too fast. I would've liked to see more of Merliah's life before discovering that she is a mermaid. Also, I found that some of the mermaids were a bit airhead-ish, and it got annoying after a while. Kids will also learn two major lessons; one, that the ocean needs to be cared for to survive and keep other creatures happy and healthy, and two, accept what makes you different and unique! This movie was absolutely fun, bright and I believe any mergirl or mermaid will love this movie. I give this movie (*****) 5 stars
